Restart prepares readers to do the hard work of reentering an in-person post-pandemic world by examining the relationships we have formed with ourselves, our devices, and others in quarantine.

Social anxiety and a tendency to avoid any awkwardness in embodied spaces were on the rise before the pandemic. Matters are far worse now that we have spent more than a year overly reliant upon our technology, incapable of safely spending time socially and relationally with others. All the while, research indicates that the kind of resilience and grit that in-person interactions involve are crucial for life satisfaction and success. This means that the social isolation from which we are emerging will have profound and lasting effects on us unless we actively work to re-integrate communal living healthily.

In Restart: Designing a Healthy Post-Pandemic Life, Doreen Dodgen-Magee discusses how to harness the energy of the global re-opening of day-to-day in-person life and how to use that energy to create healthier relationships with technology, our social connections, and ourselves. Special emphasis on social anxiety, the re-opening of businesses, and how to help children through this transition is offered. Readers will learn how to break habits that hurt us/them, keep us/them isolated, and damage our/their mental health. Also offered are tips, tools, and recommendations for how to set norms that will help readers manage their anxiety, hesitance, and over-excitement about reentering an interactive world.

Psychologist Dodgen-Magee (Deviced!) takes a look at what a “normal” postpandemic future may consist of in this useful, timely guide. She starts by explaining how grief caused by the pandemic should be identified and processed—including not only the loss of lives, but the loss of normalcy, routine, and expectations. She then recommends steps to help readers overcome grief by taking stock of how one reacted to the early days of the pandemic and exploring the ways quarantining affected one socially and emotionally. The most beneficial section provides insight on how stress can affect the mind and how unhealthy habits can take hold, and the author provides detailed information on how to identify and overcome habitual behavior. Effectively mixing philosophies, Dodgen-Magee mines the Buddhist concept of the Beginner’s Mind (maintaining an open attitude) and the Dutch practice of Niksen (the art of doing nothing) to great effect. These practical suggestions will be welcomed by those looking to do some reevaluation after a life of quarantine.

Psychologist Dodgen-Magee (Deviced! Balancing Life and Technology in a Digital Age) comprehensively details all the things society has lost and reconfigured during the pandemic--neglect of physical activities, over-reliance on screens, and increased substance abuse--and offers steps to counteract these behaviors and build new healthy habits. She aptly describes this late-pandemic period as "running a marathon with a constantly moving finish line" and provides specific ways to support our own and others' mental health, create new realities, and nurture healthy relationships with technology. Each problem is paired with a "Restart" set of guidelines geared to help readers do the work of adjusting to new realities. Special chapters deal with children's issues and relations with those who have lost a loved one to COVID-19. VERDICT Dodgen-Magee's advice hits home at a vulnerable period in our lives.
