Part of the four-book Queens of the Resistance series, saluting some of the most beloved boss ladies in Congress: a celebration of the first woman Speaker of the House and a trailblazer for generations to come, Nancy Pelosi

Behold one of the toughest dealers in the political arena, a singularly shrewd operator who cut her teeth from deep within the ranks of the Democratic Party and climbed all the way to the top. Rising higher than any woman ever who came before, Madame Speaker created a blueprint that those after her could follow. And now, back to her rightful place as Madame Speaker, she’s prepared to take back power for the people . . . and at the end of it all, in characteristic class and style, she will pass on the gavel to the next generation of badass leaders.
With illustrations, deep research, and writing as endlessly quotable as she is, Queens of the Resistance pays tribute to this phenomenal woman.

About the series: Each book of the Queens of the Resistance series is a celebration of the rebellion against the oppression of women and an embracement of the new in the United States government. The series is adorned with sass, discernment, and the badassery of the present and future leadership. The Doomsday Clock is at a minute to midnight, and the patriarchal power grid that lights “the shining city on a Hill” is about to black out. It’s time to yield to the alternative—the power of women.

An entry in the new Queens of the Resistance series, which "celebrates the life and times...of our favorite sheroes and Queen Bees of politics." In this biographical paean to a "one-woman political machine," Jones, who served as John Lewis' longtime communications director, and Trotman, an executive editor at Hachette Books, examine the life of the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. Pelosi's father, a respected progressive politician, was one of her most important role models. The other was his homemaker wife, who understood the subtleties of community and family dynamics and could "multitask and strategize like a subway train car juggler." One taught her about public life; the other, how to "navigate the echelons of power" with pragmatism and grace. Though interested in public service, like many women of her generation, Nancy opted to become a homemaker after marrying up-and-coming financier Paul Pelosi. They moved to San Francisco, where Pelosi built strategic relationships and coalitions to support progressive causes through her skills as a hostess. Her renown as a power broker eventually led her to chair the California State Democratic Party and, later, launch a successful campaign for Congress. There, she became involved in such landmark legislation as the Ryan White Act and quickly gained notoriety for "her willingness to skillfully stand up to presidents, whether Democratic or Republican." The authors call special attention to Pelosi's fearless handling of Donald Trump during the impeachment proceedings that she helped instigate, lauding her for wielding "a distinctly feminine type of power." The authors' occasional asides and insistence on addressing readers as "sis" may strike some as irritating, but their spirited defense of this trailblazing politician still makes for inspiring reading. For deeper insights into Pelosi and her career, turn to Molly Ball's Pelosi. An informative introduction to a vital political figure.
