Priceless artwork has gone missing from the home of a wealthy baronet, and his wife stands to take the blame. When Kat's employer asks for help in clearing her friend's name, Kat trades her kitchen for the homes of Mayfair's wealthiest families. Soon antiques are disappearing not only from the extravagant households of connoisseurs and collectors but also from the illustrious British Museum. As the thefts increase in frequency, Kat calls upon her friend Daniel McAdam, who has already set himself up in a pawnshop on the Strand as a seedy receiver of stolen goods. When a man is murdered in the shop, Kat must use all of her wits to see that the thieves are caught and justice is done.

In Ashley’s capable second Below Stairs mystery set in late Victorian London (after 2017’s Death Below Stairs), Lady Cynthia, the unconventional sister of cook Kat Holloway’s titled employer, asks Kat to investigate the theft of paintings from the home of Clementina, Lady Godfrey. Since Clemmie has large gambling debts, she’s the obvious suspect, but she swears she’s innocent. Meanwhile, Kat’s enigmatic friend, Daniel McAdam, is working undercover, posing as a broker at a pawnshop, to help discover the source of stolen antiques that have been appearing on the black market. Daniel disappears at the same time that an unidentified male corpse turns up at the pawnshop. Terrified for his safety, Kat begins to wonder whether the thefts of paintings and antiques might be linked, so she enlists Daniel’s brilliant friend, Elgin Thanos, to help investigate. Neither the mystery plot, which depends on major coincidences, nor Kat’s ability to juggle her demanding job and serious sleuthing feels entirely convincing, but the progress of two charming romances—between Kat and Daniel, Cynthia and Elgin—will leave readers eager for more. Agent: Bob Mecoy, Bob Mecoy Literary Agency.

Narrator Anne-Marie Piazza transports listeners to Mrs. Holloway's kitchen in a mansion in the rich district of Mayfair, London, 1881. There we follow Mrs. Holloway's employment as head cook, along with her adventures with the enigmatic Daniel McAdam and the adventurous Lady Cynthia as they hunt down thieves and a murderer. Piazza deftly shifts among the various accents of the working and upper classes, which convey much about their individual characters and about the people of Victorian England in general. In addition, Piazza cleverly uses pacing to add to the drama, making this audiobook an enjoyable listen. V.M.G. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine
