A powerful novel examining the nature of evil, informed by the works of T. S. Eliot and Freud, mythology, local lore, and hardboiled detective fiction. Sanctuary is the dark, at times brutal, story of the kidnapping of Mississippi debutante Temple Drake, who introduces her own form of venality into the Memphis underworld where she is being held.

Nine hours of deep Southern hatred. Nine hours of betrayals, brutal violence and evil. Nine hours of Faulkner read masterfully by Dick Hill is time well spent. Hill envelops the prose with a Southern accent and voices to match the sinister goings-on. Even his female voices sound convincing. But this version has even more. It's a rare instance when the narration and tone of an audiobook are equal to a listener's imagined experience with a text. Overall production quality is good, although tape hiss does take away from some parts. Acquaint, or reacquaint, yourself with this Faulkner classic. R.I.G. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
