From the New York Times bestselling author of Never Have I Ever comes the hair-raising story of a mother who moves herself and her daughter across the country to escape a dangerous stalker— but she can't keep herself and her daughter safe from a monster she can't identify

HIS GAME. HIS RULES. HER LIFE.

It started with the letters...

For actress Meribel Mills, disturbing fan mail is part of the price of fame. So when she starts getting creepy letters written in fruit-scented marker she's mostly unfazed. But there's something different about Marker Man...

He's been in her home...

Meribel's sheets smell of unfamiliar cologne, and objects are changing places inside her house. While the police insist that stalkers hardly ever escalate to violence, Meribel has played the dead girl one too many times on TV to risk becoming her in real life. She and her daughter move from Los Angeles to Atlanta for a fresh start—but no distance is great enough.

He's watching her...

Years of being in front of a camera have given Meribel a superpower—she can feel eyes on her, and someone definitely has her in their sights. Could Marker Man have followed her all the way across the country? Suddenly, every man in her life is a suspect and Meribel finds herself in the fight of her life, desperate to protect those she loves as danger closes in from all sides.

If he can't have her, no one can.

Meribel Mills, the winning narrator of this solid suspense novel from bestseller Jackson (Mother May I), says she’s 37 “according to IMDb,” but admits she’s 42 “if I went strictly by things like my birth certificate and facts.” Meribel’s major claim to fame is the sitcom Belinda’s World, in which she performed while in her 20s. Still active fan sites and message boards help get her job offers, but they have also attracted a deranged fan. When she realizes that someone has broken into the Los Angeles home she shares with her 12-year-old daughter, she accepts a role in a TV series to be filmed on location in her former hometown of Atlanta. As she says, “I... traded perfect year-round weather for the sticky-hot swamp air of a state I hated, all to make us safe.” But nowhere is safe in the age of the internet, and the stalker’s sinister messages start arriving at her new doorstep. Whom can she trust? Her ex-husband, her new boyfriend, the helpful new neighbor? Jackson, a former actor herself, wryly describes the actor’s life while providing just enough twists and an event-filled if somewhat hasty finale. Those looking for escapist fun will be rewarded. Agent: Caryn Karmatz Rudy, DeFiore & Co.

An ensemble of narrators draws listeners into the story of actress Meribel Mills, who relocates with her daughter from LA to Atlanta to escape a stalker. Each character is performed by a dedicated narrator in alternating chapters. While the narrators perform their roles effectively, the standouts are Michael Crouch, who conveys an intense level of creepiness as he portrays the stalker, and Maisy Winn, who portrays Honor, Meribel's autistic daughter, with genuine innocence. While author and narrator Jackson conveys Meribel's emotions effectively, her tone is somewhat too youthful for the character. Listeners will have to pay careful attention to which character is speaking as there is no specific announcement at the beginning of each chapter. Many characters, many storylines, and a lot of questionable behavior. E.Q. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

Jackson's (Mother May I) latest transports listeners to Atlanta, where middle-aged TV star Meribel and her teenage daughter Honor have gone in hopes of eluding an increasingly disturbing fan. Meribel relocated to Georgia, ostensibly for a new TV series, after the stalker intruded upon the safety of Meribel's Los Angeles home (things went missing and her sheets smelled of strange cologne). In Atlanta, new faces, old flames, and a recent ex all seem suspicious, and there are new bouts of unnerving behavior. Who can Meribel and Honor trust? Terror abounds as they uncover new information. As she has with many of her previous works, Jackson expertly performs part of her novel's audio production, capturing Meribel's perspective. Maisy Winn, Graham Halstead, Jeremy Arthur, Jesse Vilinsky, and Michael Crouch narrate from other characters' points of view. The use of six different narrators pulls listeners deep into the twists and turns of Meribel's novel, elevating the story to a higher level as each adds their unique stamp to the production. VERDICT Multiple narrators bring this twisty thriller to life, making for a great addition to most libraries.--Amanda L. S. Murphy
