Once You Go This Far is the fourth thrilling mystery from Shamus Award–winning and Anthony and Macavity Award-nominated author Kristen Lepionka.

Junior-high school nurse Rebecca Newsome was an experienced hiker—until she plummeted to her death at the bottom of a ravine in a Columbus metro park. Her daughter, Maggie, doesn't believe it was an accident, and Rebecca's ex-husband is her prime suspect. But he's a well-connected ex-cop and Maggie is certain that's the reason no one will listen to her. PI Roxane Weary quickly uncovers that the dead woman's ex is definitely a jerk, but is he a murderer?

As she pieces together the days before Rebecca died, what Roxane finds doesn't quite add up. From a series of trips to Detroit and across the border to a casino in Windsor, Canada, to strange calls from Rebecca's home to a charismatic political candidate, to a women's health organization, to a secretive church group that seems to have more information about its members than it should, Roxane needs to figure out how everything is connected before a dangerous secret gets someone else killed.

Allyson Ryan capably narrates this contemporary mystery set in Ohio. While jogging in the park, PI Roxanne Weary stumbles upon a murder staged to look like an accident. This is the fourth mystery featuring the hard-bitten, hard-drinking, hardworking sleuth, who is bisexual. Ryan captures both her bravado and her vulnerability as she discovers one clue after another. Secondary characters are differentiated subtly, yet their emotional quandaries are readily apparent. Characters include religious zealots, abused wives, lax police officers, and unhappy lovers--all portrayed credibly by Ryan. Like this heroine, her performance is vigorous and pragmatic. In sum, she delivers a polished performance. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine

In Shamus Award–winner Lepionka’s expertly plotted fourth mystery featuring Columbus, Ohio, PI Roxane Weary (after 2019’s The Stories You Tell), Roxane is hiking one morning in a park when she comes across the body of Rebecca Newsome, a private school nurse, who appears to have accidentally fallen off a trail into a ravine. A month later, Roxane hears from Rebecca’s grown daughter, Maggie Holmer, who suspects that Rebecca’s nasty ex-husband, Keir Metcalf, a well-connected former Toledo cop, is involved in her mother’s death. Roxane drives to Toledo, Rebecca’s home, where she meets Keir, who proves uncooperative. Further delving into Rebecca’s final days takes her to a casino in Windsor, Ontario, and into the web of a dangerous conspiracy. Along the way to the surprise ending, Roxane learns a shocking truth about her own father’s past. Roxane, with her vibrant narrative voice, stands as a worthy successor to Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone. Agent: Jill Marsal, Marsal Lyon Literary.
