Publishers Weekly STARRED REVIEW

Will scandalous secrets stand in the way of a second chance at love?

Miss Jane Quayle excels at invention. How else could the sheltered daughter of an English gentleman create lurid gothic novels so infamous someone wants their author silenced forever? Fortunately, Jane has taken steps to protect herself, first by assuming a pen name, and second, by taking up residence at remote Dunnock Castle, surrounded by rugged scenery that might have been ripped from the pages of one of her books. Her true identity remains a secret, until one dark and stormy night . . .

After years of spying for the British army, Thomas Sutherland doubts the Highlands will ever feel like home again. Nevertheless, thanks to a quirk of Scottish inheritance law, he's now the Earl of Magnus, complete with a crumbling castle currently inhabited by a notorious novelist. When the writer turns out to be the woman Thomas once wooed, suspicions rise even as mutual sparks reignite. As danger closes in, can Jane and Thomas overcome their pasts to forge a future together?

The marvelous first Love and Let Spy Regency romance from Craig (The Lady’s Deception) offers an author and a former soldier a second chance at love in the midst of a gripping mystery. Lt. Thomas Sutherland, a spy for the Crown, reluctantly travels to Scotland to claim his inheritance as the Earl of Magnus. The previous earl leased out Dunnock Castle to Gothic novelist Robin Ratliff and Thomas must decide whether to renew the lease. He’s surprised to discover that Ratliff’s secretary, Jane Quayle, is the woman he loved and lost seven years ago. Thomas does not reveal that he’s the earl to Jane, to keep her from fearing he will turn her from her home. After discovering threatening letters addressed to Ratliff, Thomas instead claims his purpose in coming to Dunnock is to investigate the threats and discover their author. Jane and Thomas grow close through the investigation, and Jane reveals that Robin Ratliff is a pen name she uses to disguise her gender. In return, Thomas divulges his identity as the Earl of Magnus. Secrets revealed, Jane and Thomas give in to their mutual attraction, but Jane fears losing her independence if their passionate moments evolve into a more permanent relationship. Craig delights with a fast-paced, intrigue-filled plot and expertly developed characters. Regency fans will eagerly anticipate future installments. Agent: Jill Marsal, Jill Marsal Agency

With titles that play on 1980s pop songs, Craig ("Rogues and Rebels" series) brings forth a new series about secret identities set in a remote Scottish Highlands village. Miss Jane Quayle is the successful author of lurid gothic romances under the pseudonym Robin Ratliff. Living in a secluded Scottish castle suits her purposes perfectly, until the new earl of the estate shows up possibly to evict her. The earl is none other than Thomas Sutherland, Jane's former sweetheart, recently returned from a spy mission in Dominica. Thomas is reluctant to reveal he's the earl and instead pretends he is investigating a threatening letter directed at Ratliff, whom he doesn't realize is Jane. It strains belief that after six years, no one in the village suspects Jane is the author, and not Thomas's secretary. But the villagers, who play a significant role in the story's events, are endearing enough to be forgiven. VERDICT Readers who love second-chance romance, secret identities, or close-knit communities will find much to enjoy in this warm-hearted series opener.--Kathryn Howe, Saint John Free P.L., NB
