With style and a lovingly detailed exploration of the land of Faerie, the thoughtful, satisfying sixth Alex Craft urban fantasy (after Grave Ransom) transports readers to a world where magic rules and shadows come to life. Alex is a private investigator and grave witch finally settling into her powers and coming to terms with her part-fae heritage—which includes an unwanted betrothal to Dugan, prince of the Court of Shadows. She also has a more intentional romance brewing with fae Falin, but his ability to commit to her is limited, as he’s the Winter Queen’s sworn protector. When Dugan asks her to help find out who killed two fae whose bodies turned up in the Winter Court, she can’t resist the challenge. Alex must dive into a world where lies are forbidden yet no explanation is straightforward. Playing fae politics isn’t her favorite thing at the best of times, and when it’s combined with a murder investigation and two feuding love interests, death may be preferable. Price's sixth series outing (after Grave Ransom) has Alex Craft still learning how to control her powers and relationship to the Faerie world when her father cryptically asks her to take the next case that crosses her path. She's approached by Dugan, Prince of the Shadow Court, who asks her to investigate the death of a court member found in the room of a murdered Winter Court member. Alex's longtime investigative associate and onetime lover, Falin, knight of the Winter Court, also gets involved. The motley group of investigators begins to uncover information about the murders, but someone or something is attempting to start a war between the two struggling courts. Alex must enter Faerie and navigate its complicated rules to find out who. Meanwhile, the Mender returns, collecting on the favor she owes him for saving her friend. VERDICT Alex Craft admirers won't be disappointed by this great addition to a popular series in which fantasy meets mystery.
