      In this well-argued book, Roth, a transcendental meditation instructor, explains that the mantra-based technique can reduce stress, raise productivity, and increase happiness. Describing TM as coming from the “oldest continuous meditation tradition in the world,” Roth outlines in clear, simple language what TM is, how it differs from other widely taught forms of meditation, how effective it is (based on the results of peer-reviewed research studies), and what happens during the four-day training period he prescribes. Roth, who refers to himself as a “natural skeptic,” contends that TM is not a religion, belief system, or way of life; rather it is a way of calming the mind. He briefly covers the history of TM, which was developed by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950s and is now supported by a worldwide organization, without delving too far into the complexities of that story. Testimonials from business leaders and celebrities, including Jerry Seinfeld, Lena Dunham, and Katy Perry, provide enthusiastic support for Roth’s claims of TM’s benefits.       Roth is not your ordinary neighborhood transcendental-meditation (TM) teacher. He wears suits, is obsessed with science, and is not into woo-woo stuff. Yet, over the past 45 years, he has become one of TM's leading exponents and instructors. Perhaps accordingly, he makes large claims for the 5,000-year-old technique: it brings greater balance in life, he asserts, as well as more creativity, better health, less stressand happiness. All of this for an investment of only 20 minutes twice a day. More about the technique is found in the three sectionsor what the author calls Pillars into which the book is divided: an explanation of the technique, the experience of being trained, and a guide to develop your full creative innermost self. All this is well and good, but those seeking a how-to guide will be disappointed, as the author stresses the need to receive individual training from a specialist, who will provide a personal mantra essential to employing the technique. Nevertheless, for the curious, the book provides a straightforward, easily digestible introduction to an intriguing discipline.
