Was it fun to do a space walk? How squashed were you in the capsule on the way back? What were your feelings as you looked down on Earth for the first time? Were you ever scared? Where to next — the Moon, Mars, or beyond?
Based on his historic mission to the International Space Station, Ask an Astronaut is Tim Peake's guide to life in space, and his answers to the thousands of questions he has been asked since his return to Earth. With explanations ranging from the mundane — how do you wash your clothes or go to the bathroom while in orbit? — to the profound — what's the point? — all written in Tim's characteristically warm style, Tim shares his thoughts on every aspect of space exploration.
From training for the mission to launch, to his historic spacewalk, to re-entry, he reveals for readers of all ages the cutting-edge science behind his groundbreaking experiments, and the wonders of daily life on board the International Space Station. The public was invited to submit questions using the hashtag #askanastronaut, and a selection are answered by Tim in the book, accompanied with illustrations, diagrams, and never-before-seen photos.

With a payload of enthusiasm, British astronaut Tim Peake and British actor/writer Robin Ince instruct the listener on what it takes to become an astronaut, the workings of the International Space Station, and the hair-raising maneuvers that must be taken to return to Earth after six months in space. Using the hashtag #askanastronaut, people from around the globe asked Peake the questions: Where do you go to bathroom up there? What was it like to walk in space? Peake cheerfully answers every question, but he sounds most proud when discussing the "international" part of exploring space with Russian, English, American, and Japanese astronauts who shared the ride on the ISS. In this follow-up to his best seller Hello, Is This Planet Earth?, European Space Agency astronaut Peake describes what it's like to live in outer space. Returning after 186 days on the International Space Station, Peake was overwhelmed by the positive response he received from people wanting to learn more about his mission and what it takes to be an astronaut. In fact, the author received thousands of questions from the public through social media. He answers the best of these with a Q&A format, dividing the questions into six chapters based on theme. Ranging from thought provoking to whimsical, the questions include topics such as prelaunch training, space research, sleeping, eating and drinking, and going to the bathroom in space. Peake's responses are thorough and often humorous. He makes it clear throughout that the job of an astronaut requires an extraordinary amount of work but is ultimately rewarding. Moreover, he expresses a profound sense of awe and gratitude about his experiences. This guide is further supplemented with photographs, illustrations, and diagrams. VERDICT An informative read that is recommended for anyone interested in space travel.--Dave Pugl, Ela Area P.L., Lake Zurich, IL
