Even though her family has very little money, 11-year-old Jenny loves her life in China. But after her stepfather dies unexpectedly, and her mother falls ill with a deadly lung disease, Jenny's world unravels. Suddenly she finds herself on a long ocean voyage to America—to live with a grandfather she has never seen. Jenny wonders what it will be like living with her rich grandfather. But when she arrives, she discovers she isn't expected—and no one believes her story. With nowhere else to go, she accepts the position of servant girl there. But her troubles have only begun. As Jenny dusts and scrubs, she learns the great, gloomy house holds shadowy secrets and hidden dangers. Edgar Award-winning author Barbara Brooks Wallace pens historical mysteries filled with riveting suspense and authentic details. In this Victorian tale of betrayal and deception, she portrays a young girl building a new life in spite of overwhelming odds. Narrator Christina Moore's dramatic performance highlights the tension as it builds to the startling climax.

Eleven-year-old Jenny Graymark Beacons arrives at Graymark Manor expecting to be warmly and lovingly received by her grandfather after her long trip from China. Instead, she is called an imposter and told to leave. Having nowhere else to go, she accepts a job as a servant and ends up living in the cellar, working all day to clean and do laundry. As she reconciles herself to her fate, Jenny begins to make friends and a new life for herself. Christina Moore captures Jenny's trepidation as she faces the terror and loneliness of her new life, as well as the change in her voice and stature as she grows more comfortable in her new role. Moore's fully voiced reading gives convincing portrayals of the austere Madam Duprey; resentful Violet; easy-going and direct Jingles; cold and cruel Winston Graymark; and Jenny's kindly grandfather. Moore's dramatic performance builds the suspense, casting suspicion every which way, until the predictable but satisfying end. W.L.S. (c) AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine
