After suffering through years of stinko screen reinventions of their heroes, comic book readers lamented that Hollywood just didn't get it. Then came Spider-Man. Director Sam Raimi got it, respecting the original source material as if it were Shakespeare. Rejoicing fans lapped up every morsel and licked the bowl clean: the film earned a mind-boggling $807 million and two Oscar nominations. The hotly awaited Spider-Man 2 hits screens July 2. With Spidey battling super-villain Doc Ock, the film should be a slam dunk. (The web slinger's real struggle, however, will be with that box office beast from hell, Harry Potter. The third feature outing of the cash cow in granny glasses, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, opens June 4.) Like Vaz's first Spidey tie-in, Behind the Mask of Spider Man (ISBN 0-345-45004-3), this book features loads of cool illustrations and production notes.
