A perfect life—until one letter threatens to unravel it all.

Lady Vanessa Cambury, Marchioness of Camburton, adores her life of bucolic contentment with her partner, acclaimed portrait painter Nora White. Together, they have raised two children from Vanessa's first marriage and built a home filled with purpose, ease, happiness, and passion — always passion.

But when Nora receives word that the child she lost twenty years ago is alive and in England, ancient heartache threatens to destroy their idyll.

To salvage their love, they must come to a deeper understanding of who they are — in the world, and to one another. Nora must learn to overcome the dark shadows of her past. Vanessa must learn to put others' needs before her own. And Nora's stubborn daughter must find it in her heart to forgive the mother she thought abandoned her. This unconventional family must rely on the powerful links of love and mercy to bind them back together.

Mulry returns to the whimsical and libertine Regency setting of Bound to Be a Groom with this sapphic tale of a particularly eventful summer for widows Nora White and Vanessa Montagu Cambury. The two women have been in love for 20 years and are comfortably settled in their life together. Then a disturbing letter hints that the daughter Nora thought was stillborn is very much alive and married with a child of her own. Nora must overcome her guilt for unintentionally abandoning her daughter and prepare for an intense reunion, in which the headstrong young woman might reject her. With support from Vanessa and some flirtatious artists with anachronistically progressive sexual mores, Nora finds the courage and confidence she needs to face these trials. Some readers will feel teased by the hints at a kink dynamic that never appears on the page, but the story is otherwise tender and satisfying, with a powerful emphasis on relationships among women.
